Item: John Odgers (known as John Ovens), a Water Carrier, in Penzance.
Description: This is a photograph of an engraving by Richard Pentreath, published by John Pope Vibert of John Odgers, known as John Ovens, who was a water carrier in Penzance. Water carriers carried fresh water to their customers, often in pitchers, and often after the arrival of mains water to the town as many preferred the spring water. The springs at Wells Field, on the Easter Promenade and at the top of Clarence Street can be seen in 2012.
