Item: Penwith House and Land's End Restaurant
Description: Colour postcard of Penwith House and Land's End restaurant with carriage outside. Numbered OA878. Established in 1860 next to the main Hotel, as a Temperance Hotel and tearoom to cater for teetotallers, Penwith House was run by the Thomases (who also ran the First and Last House). A Spanish shipwreck at the foot of the cliffs and the top floor of Penwith House were used as a mortuary and the coffin hole is still in place. It could have been designated after John Wesley's visits. There were several temperance hotels in Penzance.
