Item: Phyllis Rowe collecting water from Alverton Well
Description: This chute can be seen at Well Fields on the footpath between the Public Library and Hawkins Road. Phyllis Rowe's job was to collect water for domestic use, initially for those unwilling or unable to get to their nearest water source. After the installation of a piped water supply to large parts of Penzance, Phyllis still ha a job delivering to those households which preferred water from a chute. She is said to have charged 2d a pitcher. During hot, dry spells, the water carriers often had to wait half an hour to fill their pitchers from the less than gushing springs.
