Item: Newlyn Harbour in about 1946
Description: This view was taken looking towards South Pier, Newlyn. The men stand on the bridge linking the Fish Market on the right to the so called Mackerel Market and harbour offices on the left. In the foreground are the Swift and the Asthore, long liner pilchard drivers. Centre left is the steam crane, nicknamed the Gas Crane, used for unloading coal boats supplying the Penzance gasworks. The huts with the flagpole on the North Pier in WWll served as headquarters and maintenance facility for the RAF’s their motor launches. Later the buildings were used by the Stevenson family to maintain their fishing fleet.
