Item: The George and Dragon Inn at St Ives
Description: Described as an Elizabethan tavern, the George and Dragon in Market Place was one of the main social centres of St Ives. Aldermanic dinners were provided here on the election of the mayor. There were many local stories about smuggling, etc. After the 1549 Prayer Book Rebellion, the Portrieve or Mayor, John Payne, entertained Sir Anthony Kingston here. The sound of a gallows being erected accompanied the meal. After the meal, Kingston ordered John Payne to be hanged. The inn was remodelled in 1757, demolished in 1887. Pearce the butcher and Sampson the chemist occupied the site.
