Identification
Item: Wreck of Alexander Yeats at Gurnard's Head, September 1896
Description: Wooden barque Alexander Yeats grounded on the east side of Gurnard's Head, 20 September 1896. The vessel had been towed by the tug Gamecock and had parted her tow. She was seen in distress off Portreath, and Hayle and St Ives lifeboats failed to find her. All 19 crew were rescued by breeches buoy and much of the cargo of wood was saved and hauled to Penzance by traction engines. Alexander Yeats was built in New Brunswick in 1876. Many wooden sailing ships were built in the Canadian maritime provinces and sold cheaply to the UK during shipping booms.
