Identification
Item: Lizard Lighthouse.
Description: The Lizard Lighthouse built on Britain's most southerly point was completed in 1751. The height of the Tower is 19m, and the height above mean high water is 70m. The lighthouse was electrified in 1924 and automated in 1998. It has a range of light of 26 nautical miles. Initially, when the blowers who fanned the lighthouse flame relaxed their duty, an overlooker in an adjoining cottage gave a blast on a cow horn to encourage them to greater efforts. The original patent was granted on the understanding that during times of conflict or excessive pirate activity, the flame would be extinguished to prevent guiding unwanted ships in the Channel.
