Identification
Item: Crown Mines, Botallack
Description: This image was one of a series taken for the local tourism guide in the early 1950s. The model is looking at Crown Mines whose deepest shaft was 250 fathoms below sea level. The pumping engine was sunk in 1815. The mine worked the more shallow deposits until 1820. Throughout the 1830s it struggled to keep going but in 1842 a rich copper lode was discovered. Tin production peaked in the 1860s; in 1875 tin prices plummeted due to the cheaper deposits mined elsewhere. During her staying St Michael’s Mount, Queen Victoria visited Botallack; in 1865 the Prince of Wales and his wife visited.
