Identification

Item: Coal sacks from J H Bennetts, Coal Merchants

Description: J H Bennetts, Coal Merchants, experimented in putting coal in paper sacks in the 1960s. There was an increase in cars use at this time and a lot of house building was taking place in the area. At this time, houses were built with fireplaces. Originally the weighing machine, sewing machine and sack sealer were housed in part of the old smelting works at Chyandour. As sales increased, a new building was erected at the main coal depot in the old quarry further up the bridleway in Chyandour Coombe.
