Identification
Item: Mousehole Harbour
Description: Once an important fishing port, Mousehole in 2012 is largely a village for holiday home owners and tourists. Its charm lies in its small cottages and courtyards. At Christmas it is renowned for its lights. Originally Mousehole comprised two separate towns and was one of the principal ports in Mounts Bay, not only for fishing and markets but for the departure of pilgrims to San Compestello. It lay within the jurisdiction of the Manor of Alverton. In 1389 a grant of land was made to build a 'key' for men and boats. It exists on part of the South Quay. It was referred to as the Great Quay. Mousehole was invaded and burned by the Spanish in 1595. In the 19th century plans were drawn up by James Douglas to build a new pier. This work was completed in November 1870. Jo Mattingly suggests that there were two medieval towns here.
