Portraits of Caroline and Thomas Cooper Gotch, 1882 By William John Wainwright (1855 – 1931)
Donated by Pep and John Branfield, 2023
These portraits are inscribed ‘A Souvenir of 1881, from yours respectfully W J Wainwright’. 1881 was the year of Thomas Cooper Gotch’s marriage to Caroline Burland Yates in Newlyn. The following year, they were students in Paris, as was Wainwright. The two portraits were possibly a belated wedding present.
Exhibited: Walter Langley and the Birmingham Boys, 2011 and A Passion for Cornish Art, 2023.
