David Haughton in St Just

13 January 2018 until 17 March 2018

David Haughton (1924 – 1991) moved to West Cornwall in 1948 after dropping out of the Slade School of Art. He soon joined the ranks of the St Ives modernists, becoming a member of the avant-garde Crypt Group, the Penwith Society and the St Ives Society of Artists. While out on a bicycle ride with his friend and fellow artist Kit Barker, Haughton came across St Just, the compact mining town situated on the moors between Penzance and St Ives. He later described the encounter as both a magical experience and a turning point in his life. Even after leaving Cornwall in 1950 to teach at the Central School in London, Haughton returned every year for thirty years, often with groups of students. This exhibition of prints, drawings, and paintings shows his lifetime love affair with St Just. Gallery 1 – a selection of Newlyn School and Lamorna Group paintings in Galleries 2, 3, 4 & 5.
