We are thrilled to announce the acquisition of two remarkable items! First, we have received a stunning Roman finger ring from the St Just area, generously donated to us. This exquisite piece is a beautiful reminder of history and craftsmanship.
Roman finger ring, gold and chalcedony, c.80 – 120 AD Found: In West Penwith
A Henig Type II ring. The hoop is sub-circular in form and broadly d-shaped in section, and the bezel features an inset oval gemstone (intaglio). The subject of the intaglio is a modius (corn measure) containing four ears of wheat and a pair of scales. PAS database ref: CORN-C611F4. A ring with a similar motif, but in a clear chalcedony, was found at the Roman fort of Vindolanda, Northumberland. Recently acquired by Penlee through the Treasure Process. Penlee House Gallery & Museum, donated in 2025.
Additionally, thanks to the Friends of Penlee House, we have added a fascinating medieval brooch fragment to our collection. This unique artefact offers a glimpse into the past and enriches our understanding of medieval artistry.
Fragment of a penannular brooch, gold and blue glass, c.410 – 720 AD Found: In West Penwith
Decorated on the face with gold inlay consisting of a filagree design of one large circle with a blue glass setting, possibly cabochon, and four smaller annulets in each corner of a rectangular border made of gold beaded wire. PAS database ref: CORN-718D8C. A similar example was found in Wembury in 2016 (DEV-2F425F). Recently acquired by Penlee through the Treasure Process.
