Item: Wreck of SS Avebury, 1884
Description: Shipwreck of SS Avebury of Sunderland at Lamorna 28 October 1884. The Avebury was built in Middlesborough in 1870, and was carrying a cargo of 440 tons of iron and 210 tons of esparto grass, when it was grounded west of Lamorna in fog. An enquiry later found the master Robert Amon in error re the course set from Ushant to pass between the Seven Stones and the Wolf. The crew got ashore over the bows.
