Item: Adolf Vinnen, The Lizard. February 1923.
Description: The Adolf Vinnen, was a new ship built for Vinnen Bremen by Krupps of Kiel in 1922/3. She was 2000 tons and fitted with an ex-Uboat diesel engine and an unusual 'jackass rig'. On 9 February 1923, she sailed in ballast for Barry Dock. At 17:30 on 23 February, she was driven ashore near Bass Point, Lizard. The Lizard lifeboat was launched and 17 crew were rescued by breeches-buoy. Captain Muller and his officers remained on board to be rescued the next day. This image is one of the most famous breeches buoy rescue photographs.The wreck remains near Bass Point. See also images 1992.1547,1548 and 1549.
