Identification

Item: Dustbinman, St Just

Description: Probably taken in the lane between Queen Street and Princess Street, the person shown is Mr Sidney Prowse who worked for St Just Urban District Council (U.D.C.). The U.D.C. merged with Penwith D.C. on 1 April 1974. Mr Prowse occasionally drove the 'dustcart' as it was known locally. Initially, this would have been a 'Karrier Bantom' refuse lorry with side loading accessed by manually operated sliding doors and later, a larger, 'Shelvoke & Drewry' bin wagon which was a rear-loader with a hydraulic packer. The picture is likely to have been taken between 1963 and 1972.
