Item: SS Spes loading china clay in Penzance Dock
Description: The steamship Spes is moored alongside the western wharf of Penzance Dock adjacent to English China Clays, Lovering and Puchins whose sheds are adjacent. She was the first ship to load china clay at Penzance for direct shipment to the USA. A German steamship of 1,128 tons gross, she was built in 1908 and registered at Stettin. Under the stern can be see the sterns of a couple of obsolete torpedo boat destroyers. The Seaman's Mission, Trinity House Building and St Mary's Church tower can be seen on the skyline.
