Item: The interior of St Hilary Church
Description: St Hilary Church is unique. It has a stormy history largely due to the ministry of Father Bernard Walke who was in residence from 1913 to 1936. He instigated the broadcasting of the Nativity play from his church, acted by parishioners. In 1932 the church was vandalised by a Protestant group. You can see that the angle of the arms of Jesus is different in the central cross carved by Ernest Proctor and this rather different way of looking at the Bible stories is reflected in the 20th century works in the church by such as the Proctors, the Garstins, the Knights, Annie Walke, Roger Fry, Harold Harvey, Gladys Hynes and Joan Manning Sanders. Built on the site of an ancient fort, the church and churchyard is full of surprises
