A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Identification

Item: View from Madron Carn

Description: View of Madron Carn showing the workhouse, which was built in 1838 as a result of the country being divided into Unions as per the Poor Law Act of 1834. In the middle ground can be seen Madron Church, which dates back to 1336 when it was consecrated by the Bishop of Exeter, although it was not finished until 1550. In the background can be seen the Market House, built in 1838 and St. Mary's Church, consecrated in 1836.
