Item: American Tanker 'Gulflight' 20 miles west of Bishop Rock
Description: The 'Gulflight' on a voyage from Port Arthur, Texas to Rouen was torpedoed 20 miles west of Bishop Rock by German Submarine U30, 'Erich von Rosenberg Gruszchynski'. She was towed to St Mary's Roads for temporary repairs. The tanker 'Gulfight' of 5189 GRT was built in 1914 by New York Shipbuilding of Camden, New Jersey for Gulf Refining of Port Arthur, Texas. She was the first American vessel to be attacked by a submarine in the Great War.
