Item: Gurnards Head near St Ives

Description: A postcard with the script 'Gurnards Head near St Ives' in the top left hand corner. The Liverpool ship 'Alexander Yeats', for Devonport with deal and pitch pine from Savannah, broke away from the tug 'Gamecock' off South Wales and was wrecked near Gurnards Head on 25 September 1896. Her 19 crew were saved by breeches buoy. Much of her cargo was salved and taken to Penzance by traction engines. The 'Alexander Yeats' was built of wood at Portland, New Brunswick in 1876.
