Identification
Item: Circus Wagon on Alexandra Grounds, Penzance.
Description: This photograph of a circus wagon, with a group of unidentified children in front, was taken on Alexandra Grounds, which in 2019 is the bowling green on the Promenade in Penzance, in front of Poldhu House, with Bay View Terrace on the left and Redinnick Terrace on the right. The style of dress suggests the Edwardian period and may have been a school uniform. Emma Smith's autobiography, 'A Cornish Waif's Story' describes many fairs and transient entertainers in Penzance. The piece of ground was donated by Thomas Robin Bolitho for communal entertainment which would attract visitors to the town and complement the newly built promenade in the 1880s.
