A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Item: St John Ambulance Penzance Ambulance Cadets Annual Inspection. 1949.

Description: This photograph was taken at Penzance St John Ambulance Divisional Headquarters, which is situated in the car park at the rear of St John's Hall, Penzance. It was taken on a Thursday evening in 1949 at the Annual Inspection of Penzance Ambulance Cadet Division. Left to Right: Cadet sitting facing the camera, out of uniform is Peter Broad, Mr W.I.Wood, Divisional Superintendent of the adult Division. He became Divisional Superintendent on 6 September 1948. Mr W.J. Hitchens, Divisional President, Ambulance Cadet Division (and Headmaster of Lescudjack School). Mr David F. Bunt, Divisional Superintendent Cadets. Cadet Charles T. Symons (wearing spectacles). Cadet Peter Wolf, Mr Jimmy Rosewall, Cadet Officer and Cadet Frank James receiving the cup from Mr Hitchens. At an annual inspection, the cadets were inspected including the uniforms of all the members on parade. First aid certificates were presented to those who had passed their annual first aid exam and cups for special achievements.
