Item: Outside St John's Hall, Penzance

Description: This photograph was taken at the side of St John's Hall, Guildford Road, Penzance in the 1950s. The car in front, registration no. DDY377, is an Austin 12/4 'London' taxi on a modified A12/4 chassis made by London Coachbuilders in the London area and registered in June 1937. The two men in Cornwall County Council Ambulance Service uniform on the left are William (Bill) Angwin and Jim Opie. They were members of the Ambulance Service during the day but also members of the Penzance St John Ambulance. The bus is parked outside of the police station. The white building to the back of the photograph is the St.John Ambulance Headquarters. Sometime after this photograph was taken, the road was made one way for traffic (and not allowed to travel in the direction of this traffic).
