Item: Coronation Day Procession from St Mary's Church, Penzance.
Description: A view of the civic procession from St Mary's Church, as it headed westwards along the promenade where thousands of people were gathered, to mark the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra of Denmark on 9 August 1902. The mayor, Councillor W. Colenso was attending the coronation in London so his predecessor, Alderman Tonking led proceedings in Penzance. Local people took particular interest in the coronation of Edward VII, as during his recent visit to meet Lord St Levan, the townsfolk had been treated to the sight of his Majesty riding through the town in his carriage. Coronation morning was beautifully clear and sharp and the town was highly decorated and the Promenade was adorned with flags, portraits, representations of the Crown and Venetian masts adorned with strings of pennants. Events got underway at 08:30 at the front of the Public Buildings. There was a presentation of a tin of chocolates to 2500 school children, followed by a celebration in song after which the Mayor's procession was formed and, led by a squad of blue jackets and coastguards, marched to St Mary's Church where a short service was conducted. Civic office holders were followed by a large contingent from each of the Masons, the Oddfellows and Foresters. During the day, four bands provided music from various locations. The elaborate two-day programme had originally been prepared for 26 and 27 June but had been postponed at short notice as the King had been taken ill with an abdominal abscess that required immediate surgery.
