Item: Porthleven Harbour, Cornwall.
Description: A view of Porthleven Harbour from the slipway, dating from 1884 when the Bickford Smith Institute was under construction. In the centre of the photograph, PZ 15 'Wonder' is landing her nets, but the other fishing boats appear to be laid up, and a pilot cutter which is probably newly constructed. The boats in view are: PZ 15 'Wonder' (formerly PE reg) 45ft. T Pascoe 1869-90, Newhaven; 243PZ/482PZ 'Idea', 45.7ft, T Hichens, Porthleven, 1870-1907, Mackerel boat; 182 PZ 'Busy Bee' 28ft W&J Pascoe, 1878-1901, sold Brixham; 380 PZ 'John and Edward' (formerly PE reg) 30 ft, A Mitchell, Porthleven 1869-77, J Webb, Porthleven; 209PZ 'Charles' 29 ft, W Eddy, Porthleven 1881-1919, Exmouth; 328 PZ 'Guide' 29ft, P Bawden 1869-1894 (formerly PE reg), Mousehole. All except the 'Wonder' PZ15 and 'Idea' 482PZ are small pilchard boats. The pilot cutter is probably recently built by Bowden or Kitto.
