Identification

Item: Stocks, Camelford, Cornwall

Description: A photograph of two small boys (presumably posing for the camera) in the stocks with a seated policeman watching over them. The Researcher located five police constables with the same PC No 147 in the Cornwall Constabulary, so the number was reissued several times. One record suggests that this might be a photograph of retired policeman PC 147, John Cock who was originally a single farm labourer from Gwithian appointed on 19 August 1870 aged 22 years, promoted to 2nd class Constable on 8 July 1872, and 1st class Constable on 28 December 1890. He was stationed at Bodmin, Helston, Penzance, Helston and Truro until he left in March 1900 on a pension of £41.11.4d. Police helmets were first issued in 1871, and a similar style of uniform in 1895, and pockets on the front of uniforms were introduced in 1904. This photograph may well date from the early 1900s, shortly after PC Cock retired as he still has the uniform but it is missing the leather belt and his top button is missing or undone.
