Item: Round House at Crows-an-Wra, near Land's End, Cornwall.
Description: A photograph of a Cornish Roundhouse in Crows-an-Wra with a thatched roof and enclosed by boundary walls and a gate, on the north side of the main road 4 miles before Land's End. Two unidentified children stand facing the camera either side of the gate. At the time of the photograph, the roundhouse was the home of William Warren and the sign high on the wall of the building reads 'William Warren licensed to sell snuff and tobacco'. William had married Grace Lavers in 1881 and moved to the roundhouse earning his living as a farmer and shopkeeper. They had eleven children. Crows-an-Wra(y) previously Crous-an-Wra, Crowz-an-Wrah, is a Cornish language name meaning 'cross of the witch'. It was said that the houses were built with no corners in order that the devil could not sit inside. Other round houses could be found in various locations around West Cornwall including Sancreed. The building had been replaced by a more conventional shaped property before 1908.
