Identification
Item: Serpentine shop, The Lizard, Cornwall.
Description: A close up of the Serpentine shop with a man in the doorway. The names above the shop are Goodman (late) J Roberts. The late owner was John Roberts born in 1842, who was in business with his elder brother, Daniel. They were listed as Serpentine Ornament Dealers in Kellys Directory of 1873: Roberts, Daniel - Lizard, Landewednack, Helston; Roberts, John - Lizard, Landewednack, Helston. John Roberts died young at the age of 32 in 1874, but the business seems to have been carried on by his brother Daniel, who is again listed in Kellys Directory 1883 and, from 1889, thereafter with Henry Essex Roberts. In 1881, John Goodman married John Robert's widow, Grace and to reflect this, the name above the shop was changed although Grace was first listed in her own right as a serpentine manufacturer in the Kellys Directory of 1893. The man in the doorway cannot be identified with certainty; its unlikely to have been Daniel Roberts but may have been John Goodman who was older than his new wife, Grace. The photograph may date from the late 1880s. John Goodman lived to be 97, (he died in 1921).
