Identification

Item: Bude Canal, Cornwall.

Description: A view of the Bude canal basin, breakwater and sea lock. with working boats moored and horses and carts alongside. Bude breakwater, the sea lock and canal basin were part of the Bude Canal which was built between 1819 and 1825, mainly to carry sand inland. Rails for the sand trucks are also in view. The sea lock was in use by 1821 and reconstructed in 1835. The breakwater, vital for the safety of the sea lock was destroyed in a storm in 1838 and rebuilt in 1839. The Canal ceased trading in 1891, but the Canal Basin continued to operate as a port. The motor ketches 'Agnes' and 'Traly' were still sailing in the 1950s. The Canal basin is still used by leisure boats and a few fishing boats. At one point, the cost of maintaining the sea lock prompted the local council to propose replacing it with a concrete sill which caused uproar.
