Item: Pendeen Vau, Pendeen, Cornwall
Description: Pendeen Vau fogou (underground chamber) lies on private land behind Pendeen Manor, the birthplace of Dr William Borlase. It is 8ft high x 15ft thick x 49 ft long. The entrance passage descends steeply and turns left ending with a hole in the roof near the foot of a hedge. It is cut from solid clay with no supporting stonework with a chamber 18ft high. Three legends relate to the Vau: you can reach the sea from here; you can get to the Isles of Scilly; and visit on Christmas day and see a woman in white with a red rose in her mouth - the Spirit of Vau - and you won't live to see next Christmas.
