Item: Atlantic Hotel, Newquay 1880.
Description: A view of the Atlantic Hotel at Newquay, with two bench seats on the lawns outside. In the late 19th century, the founders of the hotel located a 10 acre site, which would enable them to create a building with each room having stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The architect was Silvanus Trevail and the hotel had 100 apartments and was opened in 1892. The opulence of the interior helped quickly build a reputation for the hotel. Harrods designed and furnished the cocktail lounge in 1935. It was used for a hospital for the wounded during WW1. In 1986, a refurbishment began, and part of the plan was to retain the original features. Over the years, celebrities have visited including The Beatles in 1967, to film part of their "Magical Mystery Tour".
