Item: Gwennap Pit, near Redruth, Cornwall.
Description: Gwennap Pit, is an open air amphitheatre near Redruth. In this photograph, a few unidentified people sit on the turf seats of the amphitheatre, some facing the camera. In the 18th and 19th Century, Gwennap was the richest copper mining district in Cornwall. The pit is about 1.7 miles N.W. near St Day. It was caused by subsidence in the mid 18th Century. John Wesley preached there on 18 occasions between 1762 and 1789. After Wesley's death, local people made the pit more regular in shape and added turf seats to form an amphitheatre (1803-06). It has remarkable acoustic properties. The fact that the depression does not collect water suggests that it drains quickly into mine workings below. Seating capacity is 2000 comfortably.
