Item: Serpentine Works, Poltesco, Lizard, Cornwall.
Description: The Poltesco stream drains the southern part of Goonhilly Downs. The stream discharges into the sea between Kennock Lands and Cadgwith. In 1828 a Mr Drew of Penzance carved serpentine from the area. The Lizard Serpentine Company built a factory at Poltesco in1855 and later expanded to include a showroom, warehouse and offices. The company had a showroom in The Strand, London. Stone came from local quarries and flat bottomed barges ferried finished products to schooners offshore. The company was wound up in 1870 and relaunched as the Poltesco Marble Company. In 1893, the company was finally wound up due to falling demand. Source: Wikipedia.
