Item: Decorated Premises for the Prince and Princess of Wales visit to Truro in 1903.
Description: This photograph forms part of a series (0655 to 0671) relating to the visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales to Cornwall in 1903, for the consecration of the nave at Truro Cathedral. The property photographed is three storey with a crown and ER between the top windows and a banner above the ground floor window stating "Long May He Reign". A number of unidentified people stand in the doorway and one man leans against the wall facing the camera. Many private businesses and public offices put on their own displays beyond the remit of the official decorations which were along the royal route, but this one would appear to be outside of the main area because it does not have the masts and garlands seen in the main streets. The Royal Cornwall Gazette reported on 16.7.1903 that "Truro put on a raiment for the visit of their Royal Highnesses". Many photos in the series show the official decorations (especially 0658 and 0660). The West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser described extensively the efforts made by local people. For example: The County Police Station displayed streamers and Union Jack flags; The West End Drapery had photos of the King and Queen set off by Union Jacks; Shop fronts displayed signs with messages like "God Bless Our Duke and Duchess" and "Loyal Greetings"; The Boscawen Hotel windows were "nicely draped with bunting"; Messrs Mallett and Sons "made a good show with flags and shields and the letters ER and a crown were outlined in lights for a night effect".
