Identification
Item: Back Road East looking towards Sea View Place, St Ives
Description: A photograph of typical 'downlong' St Ives fishing families houses. The living part of the house starts at the top of the outside steps, many with high quality wrought iron railings. The cellar doors are wide enough for pilchard hogsheads (barrels). Seine fishermen were partly paid in pilchards which they cured in their own cellars. The windows are open and a person covers their eyes in the street, suggesting a sunny day, and some children in the background look towards the camera, while a cat scratches a wooden pole in the foreground, next to mats drying on a line.
