Item: Cornish Manor House, Trewinnard, near Penzance
Description: This photograph shows an elevation of Trewinnard Manor Farmhouse, a typical Cornish manor house which was built in St Erth in Western Cornwall. The name is Celtic and signifies theTown or Farm of the Thrush (winnard). Trewinnard was built on a wooded slope which rises from the banks of the River Hayle. Local records show there was a 'deTrewinnard' as far back as 1302. The last local 'de Trewinnard Rufus' was dispossessed of the house and grounds in Elizabethan times when he murdered a villager and condemned to death , a sentence commuted to loss of lands. (Source: BBC Domesday Revisited). Trewinnard Manor, near St Erth, is renowned for its association with four families, the Trewinnards, the Mohuns, the Hawkins and the family of Sir John and Lady Nott, the present owners. Once and important medieval site and courtyard house, it was rebuilt as a country house art the end of the 17th century. Further information about Trewinnard is in the note below.
