Identification

Item: Fish Buyers' Stands on the North Pier at Newlyn.

Description: One of two photographs taken during a Mackerel Fishing Season at Newlyn (see also 2016.50.241). The nearest stand, with portable office-hut and packing plot is occupied by Harvey & Co, Newlyn, - forerunners of the renowned 'Shell-Fish Company'. Tight against the back of their office is the pile of fish trunks on Luxton's stand. The slightly raised plat occupied by the fish packing stands, or plots, was constructed shortly after the completion of the first section of the North Pier in 1888-89. These were let by the Harbour authority to fish buyers and merchants by auction either by the year or for longer periods. In 1903 the plots were let for £396. J.H. Luxton was a fish buyer from Plymouth, who purchased the Mullion Cellars (Norr'ard slip) in February 1900 and let to Signor Virilio Cipollina in 1903. The photograph is thought to pre-date 1907, when this part of the pier was widened.
