Identification
Item: St Just United Mine, Cape Cornwall.
Description: A photograph taken from the back of St Just United Mine around the bay to Cape Cornwall Mine with the Priests Cove between the two. The stack in the distance was built in the 1850s by Captain Hosking but the draught was too fierce so was later replaced. The Count House and Powder House are also in view as are the West and East Bounds buildings at the St Just United Mine. Part of the ruin of Kenidjack Castle is also to the right of this mine. The earliest record of mining at Cape Cornwall seems to be from 1787 in the cove on the Sennen side of the Cape (Priests Cove). It was worked under the name of Cape Cornwall Mine between 1836 and 1846. It worked between 1863 and 1870 under the name of Cape Cornwall St Just Consolidated Tin & Copper Mining Co. Ltd. and from 1870 to 1873 under its original name. Operations ceased in 1873, although in 1879 its sett was joined to St Just United when that mine was reorganised.
