Description: A photograph across the water of the signs on the Ice Works of Holman & Sons, Norway Ice Store, and B J Ridge, fish salesman. To the right is Peacock & Co, Gilberts, and T. Richards. Beyond is the Royal National Mission to deep sea fishermen, for which the patron was HM Queen Alexandra, Stanley Institute. Queen Alexandra was crowned on 9 August 1902, so the initial dating of the photograph can be no earlier than this. However, the Stanley Institute at Newlyn seems to have started in 1903 (first newspaper reference is The Cornishman 2 July 1903 and in the 1901 census the premises are occupied by Henry Mews, draper). T. Richards was Thomas Richards, fish salesman as was Peacock & Co on the corner. In the middle was John Gilbert's hairdresser shop. The photograph would have to pre-date 1907, when the Strand was enlarged and extended eastwards to connect with Newlyn Town irrespective of the state of the tide. Gibson photographs were used in the failed court case of June 1904 between RR Bath and the Harbour Commissioners, when RR Bath claimed ownership of the rocks by the ice works, so it is likely that the photographs can be more narrowly dated to c.1904, as RR Bath was told to demolish the extension when he lost the court case.
