Item: Gulval Chapel
Description: Gulval chapel with two young girls facing the camera outside the closed church gates. This is the second chapel built in Gulval, the first was built in 1822 but soon became too small. This chapel opened in 1884 and closed in 2006 due to dwindling congregations and the rising costs of maintenance. The Trevaylor River runs between the chapel and the four cottages on the right, known as Chapel Row. This made the Sunday School under the chapel very damp. This photograph was taken before 1900 as the land behind the garden gate, in the foreground, had sixteen houses built on it in the early 1900s and the building on the left of the image, is no longer there and the area is now a small car park. The chapel was sold in 2008 to an artist who lives in it and sometimes has exhibitions inside.
