A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Identification

Item: Mount's Bay, Penzance. Mackerel boats going to sea and a sailing vessel sailing in.

Description: An image of mackerel boats going to sea and a Scandinavian vessel (brigantine) sailing towards the camera. 110 PZ is painted on the sail on the boat in the foreground and is the mackerel boat 'Nora Creina', 42 ft long owned by Peter & Thomas Smith, Newlyn 1869-1890. Originally, she was registered PE the Penzance registration up to 1869. 'Nora Creina' was sentimental song written in 1830. Next to her is a skiff with two men on board. Sailing towards the camera is a Scandinavian sailing vessel with a small boat - possibly a pilot - next to it. The sailing vessel has a square stern with her small boat in davits hanging over it. This was called a Marstal stern and was popular with Danish and other Scandinavian ships. The mackerel boats on the horizon have tacked. An identical image is at 2016.50.198
