Item: Penzance Dock Works - The Dredger.
Description: The first steam powered bucket dredgers were developed early in the 19th century. A continuous line of buckets is pulled by chains and the spoil tipped down a chute into hopper barges for disposal at sea. The steam dredger enabled many ports to be developed. The derrick by the lock gate on Penzance harbour may have been used to replace the gate after the blizzard of 1891.
