Item: Penzance School of Art
Description: Originating in 1852, Penzance School of Art and exhibition hall was re-established here in 1880, built by public subscription to the design of the Cornish architect Silvanus Trevail, FRIBA. It is built of granite with 2 sandstone plaques built into its façade; on the left is the Borough Arms of Saint John the Baptist, on the right is the rose, thistle and crowned shamrock. The stained glass windows and wooden doors seem to be boarded up so this could be just prior to completion. Pictured here as builders’ rubble, Morrab Road developed subsequently to link with Alverton Street and the Promenade. The buildings on the left are part of the Branwell Estate, stables and agricultural buildings. The Mayoress, Mrs Wellington, laid the foundation stone in 1886 to an adjacent Art School which eventually became part of this Art School. A School of Science was built to its left and that became a free library for the public. The future is uncertain for 2015 when Penwith College takes over the adjacent public library. This area is in 2014 Penlee Park, housing the Penlee House Museum, and a car park. The road to the right of the picture led to the home of the Branwells and to Well Fields. Henry White extended the building in 1888 to incorporate an Exhibition Hall.
