Identification
Item: The Bedford Bolitho Gardens
Description: The Bedford Bolitho Gardens, Penzance, with Alexandra Terrace in background, were built on the site of the former Serpentine Works, Wherrytown re-using much of the stone to create flower beds, seating and shelters. They had been opened on 24 May 1916 by Mrs Bolitho of Trewidden and Mr. R.F Bolitho of Ponsandane, without ceremony because of the war situation. The garden was destroyed on the night of 6th March 1962 in the Ash Wednesday storms. In 2011 it is a recreation area for the public. This picture, taken in the 1950s depicts the Bolitho Maternity Home; bandstand; Penlee Bowling Club with the old Market House Clock inset; putting green and flower beds. The path from which this is taken is adjacent to the beach.
