Identification
Item: Pilchard Drivers in Newlyn in 1949
Description: Newlyn Harbour: a sunny morning view from the North Pier looking over the decks of moored pilchard drivers towards Gwavas Quay, Harbour Road and the fish market with houses off Chywoone Hill beyond. From left to right the fishing boats are: Boy George of Porthleven PZ576; Jane of Penzance, formerly Love; Britannia PZ8 from Porthleven, renamed Grace; the hulk; Twilight of Newlyn PZ137; Swift PZ84 (Atkinson); Gleaner of Newlyn PZ36. Away from the pier is the Boy George which was recorded as no longer fishing after 1949. The hulk was a concrete coal barge Cretehill which was used to store coal for the East coast steam drifters during the spring mackerel season. She was claimed to have been sunk by a German bomb in May 1941, although she had been sitting on the harbour bed for many years despite her decks remaining above sea level at high tide. She was broken in two by a salvage team in 1949; the two halves were refloated separately and towed out to sea where they were sunk. The harbour was then dredged.
