A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Identification

Item: The hundredth anniversary celebration of W N Bassett, Tobacconist and Cigar Merchant

Description: This is the double fronted shop of W N Bassett decorated for its centenary. The fascia board reads Tobacconist Bassett Cigar Merchant. Each window has dark curtaining to the shop. The window on the left has an illuminated sign for Wills Capstan cigarettes above a frame with striped background and a bow above showing a couple smoking Players Weight cigarettes. Packets of 10 and 20 cigarettes are suspended around this. Two plaques say 1858 and 1958. The side of the window has an eye catching display of Senior Service cigarettes. An illuminated Wills Gold flake sign hangs above the door which is engraved Wills Woodbines. The right hand window has a 100 year celebration. Tipped by an illuminated Wills Gold Flake sign, a matching striped feature has a very slim lady with a long tight dress and large brimmed hat, the bow printed with Players Please, and an oval sign beneath the picture.
