Identification
Item: The Western Hunt
Description: Unfortunately the photograph is undated; the scene is of a country road, the bystanders in a rather Victorian style of dress. Three horse riders in hunting pink have dozens of hunting dogs at their feet whilst a domestic dog surveys the scene. The Western Hunt was a large organisation in Cornwall, its hunts advertised and reported in the local papers. Traditionally it met on Boxing Day when, before the hunt, the stirrup cup would be offered to all participants by a hospitable landlord. The sport was banned by law at the end of the 20th century.
