Identification

Item: Porthgwarra Cove

Description: This is a photograph of Porthgwarra Cove with six houses lying within the green landscape which features stone walling and field patterns. The house in the foreground to the right has a thatched roof and in 2011 is lived in by Peter Ley. The beach is sandy but tends to get heavy quantities of seaweed. The cove is very popular with holiday makers. Inshore fishing boats pull up on the slipway seen through mouth of a cave. The hole in the rock was blasted by miners so enabling better access from both sides of the cove for fishermen. From left to right in the photograph is the slipway beneath the first house which was demolished in the late 1860s and replaced by a seine loft which was converted into a studio for Etchl Bins whose grand-daughter lives in Treen. It was converted into a bungalow for Dick and Jean Rawlings whose daughter lives at St Levan; a trummel; a holiday cottage owned by the St Aubyn Estates.
