Identification
Item: Early daffodils being picked on the Isles of Scilly for the mainland market
Description: This is one of a series of photographs taken for the Great Western Railway magazine. It shows the start of the journey of the daffodil from the field where it is picked, probably by the family of William Trevellas who stands with his trademark hat. In the 1880s it was he who had investigated the feasibility of growing flowers for the mainland market. The idea was expanded by Dorrien Smith of Tresco and within two years a marketing system which lasted over 100 years, was established. The series follows the journey from fields on Scilly to ferry to Penzance and thence the railway to Covent Garden.
